The Montana LLC route

No sales tax, and permanent plates on anything 11 years or older.

Montana charges no sales tax on a vehicle, and it lets a Montana LLC register one without the member living there. On a six-figure car in a high-tax state that is the single largest line item in the whole purchase — and it is entirely legal for the LLC to own and register the car in Montana.

What it saves on your car

How it works

  1. Form a Montana LLC. The state filing fee is about $35.
  2. Appoint a Montana registered agent — a Montana address for the LLC. Typically $100–300 to set up and around $125 a year.
  3. The LLC buys the car. The bill of sale and title are in the LLC's name, not yours.
  4. Register it in Montana through the agent. No sales tax is due, because Montana doesn't levy one.
  5. A vehicle 11 model years or older qualifies for permanent registration — one payment of about $217 and it never needs renewing again.
  6. File the LLC's annual report ($20) and renew the agent each year. That's the entire ongoing cost.

Where it pays off most

The saving is your home state's combined sales-tax rate multiplied by the purchase price, minus roughly $350 of setup and about $145 a year after that. So it scales with the car:

What to know before you do it

Your home state's law still applies to you

Most states levy a use tax on vehicles brought in by residents, and require a resident-owned car kept in-state to be registered there. The LLC owning the car doesn't change where you live.

Some states actively pursue it

California, Massachusetts and others have run enforcement campaigns against residents registering cars out of state, and have brought tax cases. Enforcement posture changes; the saving is not the whole picture.

Insurance is the sharp edge

An insurer told a garaging address where the car doesn't actually live can deny a claim — which turns a few thousand saved into a six-figure loss on exactly the day you need the policy to work.
